Bert - The Swamp Monster Mimic

Many would see Bert as a monster of the swamp, mimics usually are. But the same cannot be said for Bert, I have found he is more puppy-like than most people would give him credit for.
After looking into his history I have discovered that he was abandoned at birth by his parents. No one knows where they went or whether they still live, but they left a baby Bert alone in the swamp to fend for himself.
Without a family around him to teach him the ways of the mimic, Bert was left to muddle through his powers by himself. He began trying to fit in with the other swamp creatures, such as the otters and horses he came across. And whilst he could take on characteristics of the creatures, he could never manage a full transformation. So he could never fully integrate with the creatures.
Some, such as Hayley the Swamp Horse, tried to take him into their herd regardless of what he looked like. But, unfortunately for Bert, he was unable to sustain himself on their diets and eventually had to leave them to keep himself healthy. Thankfully, Hayley stayed friends with him, and they would often play together.
The best time for Bert was when he was playing with the other creatures. There was no pressure for him to fit in and he felt free to play as he liked. He found that he especially liked to play fetch and would often urge other swamp creatures to throw sticks or bones for him to catch. His mashup of creature features made a perfect body for bounding through the swamp mud and swimming in the waterways. Without knowing it, Bert had taken on the best characteristics for surviving in the swamp and he moved through the swamp quicker than any other creature.
Eventually, Bert realised that he had a plethora of friends he could rely on to help him and keep him company. He decided he was happier just surviving by himself and floating from group to group rather than pigeon holing himself into one species.
Now, he has claimed a large lake in the centre of the swamp as his home and he enjoys fetching whatever sticks and bones the passing creatures throw for him.
He is still visited regularly by Hayley, whenever her herd passes through his part of the swamp. And whilst his existence may look a little lonely from afar, Bert is happy with his life and has learnt to live his version of a mimic existence.
